The Saturdays' "Chasing Lights" Album Review

1

As we all know, ever since the demise of spice girls, Sugababes and Girls Aloud monopolize the girl group market in the UK. (I didn't consider Atomic Kittens though, they didnt survived till now rite. =P) Having shared the same record label with Girls Aloud, it is inevitable that there would be comparisons being made between them. The Saturdays were also offered the chance to record songs that are rejected by Girls Aloud. Kinda abit of an insult eh.

First Impressions

Chasing Lights is pretty impressive for a debut album. With electro-pop elements and memorable tunes as with the lyrics, the girls are bound to shine. Their stuff is definitely much easy to digest compared to Girls Aloud. The Saturdays are Straight-up Electro-Pop, Girls Aloud are more towards the quirky side. One of the albums that is on heavy rotation on my IPod. =)

Standout Tracks

  • If This Is Love
First single. WOW!!! It packs with a punch I must say. Addictive on first listen. The hooks are amazing.

  • Up
Second single. Bouncy Synth. Very High-NRG. This is what I call high quality pop. Girls Aloud should be very scared by now. =)

  • Issues
Third single. A decent pop ballad. Controversy surrounds this song due to it's lyrics. Some hear it as "stab you or kiss you" and "slap you or kiss you". Listen to the album version though. The radio edit is "leave you or kiss you". You be the judge. =)

  • Lies
Love the chorus. A single worthy song.

  • Work
My fave track off the album. I SO LURVE THIS SONG. Was kinda pissed when they scrap it for "Just Can't Get Enough", but was ecstatic when it's confirmed as their 5th single. The tempo is insane. This is a pop song with muscles. Very strong and heavy-hitting. I could practically strut when this song is being played. =P One of the best song that I've ever heard in my life so far.

  • Chasing Lights
A mid tempo ballad. Soothing. Shows that the girls have versatility and range.

  • Set Me Off
Bouncy intro. A distinctive Saturdays sound. Reminds me of Goldfrapp electro-glam stuff though.

  • Fall
Very Subtle and classy for a ballad. Gets me a little emo.

  • Why Me, Why Now
This song feels very breezy. =) Good for the summer.

  • Just Can't Get Enough
Fourth Single. A cover of the Depeche Mode original. I'm still sour that this song didn't hit Number 1. Being a Comic Relief single (For charity). It should. Damned Flo Rida. Love the Video. The girls as pin-up girls. =)

Final Verdict

The Saturdays gets 3 F's from me. Fun, Flirty and Fabulous. =) Loves the pastel colours that each girl represents. To me, they brighten up my day no matter what. Bubblegum Electro-pop without feeling sick of them. I must really applaud them. For a debut to be this good. It's rare. Plus from their chart success of their singles. It proves that they are no fluke. They should go down with this route of sound and success would be their's.

A minor complain is that they do not have any writing credits for this album, which they said that they would more involve in the sophomore album. But I guess a solid debut will cement their future in the market. The record company wanna play it safe this time.
Watch out Girls Aloud and Sugababes, The Saturdays are here to stay!!!!

Stay tuned for tmr's Rickified's Rants, there would be an extra extra on The Saturdays. =P

Interesting name eh. A girl group named after a day of the week. The Saturdays are a British-Irish girl group made up of 5 gals which comprises of Una Healy, Mollie King, Frankie Sandford, Vanessa White and Rochelle Wiseman. Among them, Frankie and Rochelle are from the now defunct S Club 8. (also known as S Club Juniors) The Saturdays is under the record label, Fascination Records, a sub-division of Polydor records. Fascination Records houses Girls Aloud and Sophie Ellis Bextor too. =)

Their Debut album, 'Chasing Lights', has produced 4 UK top 10 singles: "If This Is Love". "Up", "Issues" and "Just Can't Get Enough". (Released in chronological order) The band was chosen to release the 2009 Comic Relief single, "Just Can't Get Enough", which is a cover of a Depeche Mode song. This song is included in the re-issue of their album on 16th March 2009.

Brief History

Being signed to Fascination Records, a sub-label of Polydor Records, a pop sound is expected in a good way. The genres being labelled for them are Pop, electropop, dance pop. Very me. =) Their debut album, 'Chasing Lights', was recorded during May and June 2008 with input from multiple producers and writers. The group supported Girls Aloud on their Tangled Up Tour before the release of their debut single, "If This Is Love", in July 2008 and peaked at number 8 on the UK Singles Chart.

2nd single, "Up", was released in October 2008 and peaked at number 5. This track was also featured on a US trailer for Ugly Betty. And in the same month, 'Chasing Lights' was released to generally positive reviews by critics. The album peaked at number 9 on the UK Album Chart and has been certified gold since. 3rd single, "Issues", was released in January 2009 and peaked at number 4.

And in January, it is annouced that their 4th single would be a cover of the Depeche Mode song, "Just Can't Get Enough". It was released as one of the official Comic Relief 2009 singles. It peaked at number 2 on the UK Singles Chart, just behind Flo Rida's 'Round Round', making this the first Comic Relief single not to reach number 1 since 1994. Which I think is quite damned cause it's a charity single, it should hit number 1. I think 'JCGE' is better than 'Round Round', downright annoying.

The girls have also confirmed that they will be on tour, headlining themselves. Called "The Work Tour", the girls also stated that the start of the tour will coincide with the release of their fifth single, "Work". YAY!!!! I LURVE "Work". Read tomorrow's The Satudays album review for details. =)

What's In Store for the future

The girls revealed that they will be releasing their second studio album before the end of 2009 and excited to be writing some of the tracks themselves. Looking forward to it. =)
